Richard Mille is a brand that has been around for only about 15 years, but in that time they have made a big impact on the luxury watch market. What makes Richard Mille watches so special? It starts with the man behind the brand: Richard Mille.
Richard Mille has always had a fascination with technology and how it can be used to create beautiful objects. He also has a passion for cars, which is evident in his watches. His first creation was the RM 001 Tourbillon, which pushed the envelope with materials never before seen on luxury watches.
But what makes Richard Mille watches really stand out is their durability and lightweight design. They are built to withstand everyday use while still looking good enough for any occasion. And thanks to Renaud et Papi, Richard Mille’s research and development arm, these watches are able to combine advanced engineering with contemporary craftsmanship.
Richard Mille was born in Draguignan, France in 1951. He started his career at a French watchmaking company before he went on to work for Mauboussin and then Audemars Piguet.
In 2001, Richard Mille founded the company that he always wanted to create- with a contemporary approach to watchmaking. At the ripe age of 50, Richard Mille created his first watch brand- Richard Mille Watches.
Richard Mille was founded in 2005 by the two men, who had met professionally and shared an interest in automobiles, aeronautics, and all things mechanical; they were both also passionate about watches. The two men created Richard Mille as a business partnership and share an equal ownership stake in the company.
The Richard Mille RM35-02 ‘Rafa’ was released in 2016 as a tribute to Rafael Nadal, who is a friend of the brand and an ambassador for Richard Mille. The watch was designed with input from Nadal himself and quickly sold out after the tennis start was wearing the watch after he won the French Open.
Made of lightweight titanium, the RM35-02 is one of the lightest watches that Richard Mille has ever produced. It features a skeletonized dial with red accents on the hands and hour markers, as well as Rafa’s signature on the back. The watch is powered by a Calibre CRMA1 movement, which has a power reserve of 55 hours.
